The automobile involved in this lawsuit was a 1963 Ford Granada being operated at the time of the collision by a 16-year-old boy driving it on a county road which was covered with ice at the time of the accident. The accident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on a January night and the collision occurred at a curve in the road. The youth was driving on the wrong side of the road at a rate of approximately 40 miles per hour when he struck an electric light pole near the crest of a hill, some 30 feet from the highway, with the front end of the car. A police officer, after examining the car and the surrounding area, concluded that the cause of the accident was the youth's attempt to avoid hitting a dog which was lying on the road. The car was owned by the son of the plaintiff and was loaned to him. *99 At trial, the defendant moved for a directed verdict on the ground that the youth driver was a volunteer and, as such, could not be considered a "guest" within the meaning of the guest passenger statute.
